5 Paragraph Academic Essay Format

In English class today, we learnt about how academic 5 paragraph essays are formatted, as well as its parts and how to write them in the best way possible. From this, I was able to retrieve some of the memories of the things I’ve learned previously at school in the US, as well as gain some new information. Let me explain to you what I learned in detail.
First off, when it comes to academic writing, the title becomes extremely important. This is the part where you can break almost any academic rule to show the readers your cleverness, and really appeal to them. Academic titles have mainly two parts which is divided by a colon. The first and shorter section is the attention getter, while the second part is a brief explanation. In the attention getter, you should use techniques such as alliterations or unique things like puns. For example, if you make a pun using a phrase that’s famous in public consciousness, it can really draw the reader’s attention. Next, in your title, you must state what you’re looking at in the essay, what your position is, and about where/when.
Moving on to the actual writing piece, an academic essay must always have an intro. Its first part is a hook / attention getter. Much like the title, you have a bit more freedom and are allowed to be creativity in this section. Its purpose is to make the reader want to read on, and you can attract the readers by either showing wit through humor, or making them feel closer to the topic. A perfect example of this is making a piece of shocking information / statistics comprehendable to the reader by converting it into something like, “In the time it takes the average reader to read this sentence, —- has —-.” Then, it should be followed by background information. Without this important piece, your thesis statement won’t be understood by most readers as they may not be knowledgeable in that field. Of course, then comes the thesis statement. It must include a topic, claim, and your three reasons. Here, you get to make your position clear to the audience, therefore, it is one of the most crucial sentences in your whole essay.
The academic is then followed by three body paragraphs. Your strongest claims should come first and last, as they are the ones readers remember most. Every body paragraph starts with a topic sentence, which is similar to your thesis statement because it has your topic and claim, just without the three reasons. And IN that body paragraph, there are three supporting sentences. It should add up to three points being made in every body paragraph, and you should try to use different types of evidence / support / argument. To list a few, there are options like quotes, expert information, case studies, data, and more. Again, your strongest points should placed first and last. Body paragraphs must be finished off with a good concluding sentence. There are two types you can use, which are the paraphrase type and summarize type. If you feel that more emphasis is necessary, then you can summarize your three points, however, if you don’t, you can simply just restate your claim.
Lastly, after the three body paragraphs, an academic essay must always have a conclusion. Before anything, you should summarize your writing piece by identifying the three most essential points you’ve made. Then, there should be a conclusion. It must relate it back to the readers, and make them feel more connected to whatever you’ve written about. Its purpose is to make the readers care about your essay, so state why they should care and why it’s important in this section. To wrap it up, you must state your limitations. This gives you the chance to tell them what you couldn’t do, and suggest someone else to make it up for it. For example, if your topic has something to do with China, we have limited resources on the topic as we don’t speak the language. Additionally, a common mistake found in many academic conclusions is bringing up something new. This is something we must be careful not to do, as your writing should be unified.
Formatting aside, throughout your entire essay, you should keep in mind to make it as sharp and concise as possible. From today’s lesson, I learned how to make my five paragraph essays much more organized and alluring to readers. With this knowledge, I’d like to make my upcoming writing pieces higher in quality.
